interests. Amazing diversity of scenery, brilliant green paddy
fields, sun-bronzed beaches, historic ruined cities, small lively
villages, wildlife in tropical jungles and hill country tea
plantations literally within hours of each other. Above all, smiling,

Sri Lanka’s ancient cities with stupendous monuments,
sculpture, carvings and huge man-made lakes, landscaped
gardens… have taken pride of place among the treasure of the
ancient world. Seven of these sites are listed in UNESCO’s
World Heritage Sites. Its “dagabas” exeed in size, the pyramids
of Egypt.

However, the earliest recorded civilization dates back to 380BC,
when Anuradhapura was established as the first Capital City.
The impact of many cultures over the centuries from south India
to Portuguese, Dutch, and British, have resulted in the country’s
culture being enriched by a rich diversity, much of which is
evidence today.
Population & religions
The people of Sri Lanka are of diverse races and faiths. The
majority are Sinhalese Buddhists, while among the minorities
are the Tamil Hindus, Moors Islam and Burgher Christians.
There is also a considerable population of Christians among
Sinhalese and Tamils. 19 million population, 74% Sinhalese,
18% Tamil, 8% others, Literacy rate average 80%- one of the
highest in Asia.
Climate
Warm and fine year round. Average temperatures around 27
Centigrade in Colombo going down as the land rises to the hill
country to as low as 10 Centigrade.
Communication is rarely a problem because English is widely
spoken in all parts of the country. Sri Lankan Standard Time is 5
and 1/2 hours ahead of Greenwich.
Accommodation
Sri Lanka offers you a wide variety by way of accommodation
which ranges from international chain Hotels to informal Guest
Houses. Bed and breakfast units/ Tea estate bungalows are
also available. For the visitors who wish to prepare their own
food, apartments with cooking facilities are available.
